What is an EBT Payment?
Also referred to as a 'Food Stamp', the Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) is an electronic system that allows a recipient to authorize the transfer of their government benefits from a federal account to a retailer account to pay for products received. EBT is used in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Guam. EBT has been implemented in all states since June of 2004. How do you accept EBT?
Retailers who wish to start accepting food stamps in their store can apply online by registering for a USDA eAuthentication account at the USDA website (see Resources). Registration is free. If you prefer a paper application, call 877-823-4369, and request that an application be mailed to you.
